  • CNA Equivalency

Information/intro: The purpose of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) equivalency in California is to provide an alternate pathway for individuals to become eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) without completing a nursing program. In California, individuals who have completed a nursing program that is not approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) or the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), or who have completed a foreign nursing program, may apply for CNA equivalency. This program allows individuals to demonstrate their nursing skills and knowledge by completing an approved CNA training program and passing a CNA competency exam. Once an individual has obtained CNA equivalency, they may apply to take the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN and become licensed as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in California. However, it is important to note that CNA equivalency does not guarantee eligibility for licensure and individuals must still meet all other licensure requirements set by the BRN or BVNPT.
